A short car journey from Ida May will bring you to Donna Nook, with it’s network of public footpaths and marram grass covered sand dunes. Now synonymous with the grey seal colony which inhabits the mudflats from October to December, Donna Nook also played it’s part during WWII. Prisoner of War Camp 292 was situated here, accommodating mostly German and Polish prisoners. Many of the prisoners were sent to work on local farms at a time when feeding the nation was vital. After the war, some of them stayed in the area, marrying local girls and beginning new lives as naturalised British citizens. Imagine the dilemma faced by these men when the war ended: return home to your family and a country likely devastated by the conflict or remain in the UK, find paid work and send financial support to your loved ones.

One or two of the POW camp buildings are still in existence and you can see the images here: Syston Images By Martin J Richards. MA. BA(Hons). ARPS | PoW Hostel 292B Donna Nook
